3 Killed in West Texas Oil Well Blowout

According to the spokesperson for Chesapeake Energy, 3 oilfield workers lost their lives, and a fourth person suffered injuries after an oil well blew out. The cause of this tragic oilfield accident is still under investigation. The accident happened in Burleson County on January 29th.

While this story is relatively new, the type of account is as old as the oil and gas drilling industry. Even though there are far fewer injuries and accidents that happen during the oil extraction process these days, they still occur at an alarming rate. Tragic stories like this one happen enough that people know working on a drilling rig is a dangerous job. However, just because there are inherent dangers in a situation, that doesn't mean that employers aren't still required to provide a safe work environment. When it comes to worker safety, most employers do a good job of making sure the proper training and protective measures are taken so that workers can perform their duties as safely as possible. Sadly, like in the story above, accidents still happen.

Oilfield Fatalities

Texas is well known for its oil production, and that is reflected in the number of people employed in this industry. According to a study done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 2007-2011, 199 workers lost their lives while working in the Texas oil and gas industry. This number regretfully take the number one place in a state to state comparison. The second-place state is Oklahoma, with 64 deaths. It stands to reason that the area with the highest number of workers would have the most considerable amount of injuries and fatalities. However, that doesn't mean that this reality has to be acceptable. The only way to help lower the numbers is to hold companies accountable for the accidents that happen at the work sites.

Due to massive demand, companies may not have enough workers, and this can cause an avalanche of side effects from improper training to worker exhaustion. Most oilfield workers perform their duties outdoors, and so this tough work is made even tougher by the elements. This deadly combination results in destroyed lives and families.
